The next time you are visiting any of these cosmopolitan cities and eating off the best off the best from the land, be sure to check out the thriving cocktail scene too. Audrey Sanders declared London to be “the best cocktail city in the world,” and one of its finest bars is definitely Mark’s Bar, the brainchild of Mark Hix, one of London’s most celebrated restaurateurs. The New York-style apothecary cocktail bar boasts a cocktail menu championing British drinks like the famous Hix Fix (£13.50), a Morello cherry and Somerset apple eau de vie. For a fuss-free drinking experience when in Tokyo, check out Bar High Five, known for its unparalleled service and perfectly executed classic drinks. Helmed by Japanese tippling maestro Hidetsugo Ueno, the cosy interior allows you to watch him in action while indulging in a Japanese-invented Bamboo (Fino Sherry and dry vermouth) and a High Five hotdog with homemade bourbon sauce as recommended by James Hadfield of The Guardian.

Marks Bar 16 Great Guildford Street, Southwark, SE1 0HS London. Tel: 020-7921 9508, www.hixterbankside.co.uk
