For two days in August, The Apurva Kempinski Bali turned its Candi Ballroom into a lively portrait of Indonesia, bringing together art, music, gastronomy, craft, and conservation for the second edition of Powerful Indonesia Festival 2026. Held on 16 and 17 August as part of the resort’s Powerful Indonesia: Spice Route Legacy campaign, the festival marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day through a programme rooted in the archipelago’s maritime heritage and the many cultures it connected.
The story behind Powerful Indonesia Festival 2026 goes beyond the historical movement of spices. The resort’s Spice Route Legacy campaign looks at the seas as routes through which people, knowledge, beliefs, craftsmanship, and ideas travelled and evolved, shaping Indonesia’s identity along the way. That philosophy found a contemporary expression through exhibitions, artisan demonstrations, talks, performances, and a creative market that invited visitors to engage with the people behind the country’s cultural landscape.
Among the programme highlights was a talk by Biorock Indonesia, exploring coral restoration and community-led marine conservation in Pemuteran, North Bali. Balinese contemporary artist Putu ‘PW’ Winata followed with an artisan talk and exhibition inspired by Biorock and Indonesia’s marine heritage, while Black Hand Gang Studio offered a live demonstration of contemporary printmaking.
Music gave the gathering another layer of character. The festival opened with Pancer Langit and Nada 1928, whose performances connected traditional Indonesian sounds with contemporary arrangements, before Nyonya Ayu brought vintage Indonesian pop, jazz, and keroncong influences to the stage. DJ Halim Ardie, DJ Masayu, DJ Rika Yuniorika, and DJ Nicodemus added a more modern pulse across the two days.
At the creative market, Powerful Indonesia Festival 2026 placed local makers and the country’s creative economy in the foreground. Up to 20 artisans and homegrown brands presented textiles, jewellery, design-led products, and sustainable craftsmanship, supported through the festival’s collaboration with Bank Rakyat Indonesia and its work with Indonesian MSMEs. Guests could also sample Indonesian dishes prepared by The Apurva Kempinski Bali’s chefs, extending the cultural conversation to the dining table.
The programme closed with a ceremonial tribute to Indonesian veterans, recognising their service and contribution to the nation’s history. For The Apurva Kempinski Bali’s General Manager Vincent Guironnet, the occasion was as much about community as celebration: “The Powerful Indonesia Festival returns for its second year following the tremendous success of last year’s celebration. This year, we are bringing renewed energy and fresh sparks to honour the soul of Indonesia, supporting the nation’s MSMEs and artisans, celebrating its remarkable craftsmanship, and paying tribute to the veterans. With its blend of heritage, contemporary creativity, and community participation, Powerful Indonesia Festival 2026 offered a lively reminder that Indonesia’s past remains very much part of its present. The event was opened for public, allowing Indonesian heritage to be widely experienced and shared.
