Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort has been honoured with a Sustainability Award from Nespresso, marking a significant milestone for the resort’s environmental efforts. Throughout 2025, the property successfully returned over 41,422 used coffee capsules for recycling. This achievement highlights how a well-managed sustainability programme in Bali can produce measurable results within the luxury hospitality sector.

While Bali remains a premier global destination, the island faces a significant challenge with waste management. In 2024, the region generated more than 1.2 million tons of waste, placing a heavy burden on the local environment. For the hospitality industry, the mission has moved beyond simple luxury; it is now about ensuring the island’s natural beauty remains intact for the future. The success of this sustainability programme proves that luxury hospitality in Bali can thrive while protecting the island’s fragile ecosystem.

Nespresso has long been a pioneer in this space, working with over 168,550 farmers globally through Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan to ensure coffee is grown with care and purpose. Their recycling initiative in Indonesia turns a daily ritual into a restorative act. For hotel partners like Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, the process is effortless but impactful. Used capsules are collected during regular deliveries and sent to a facility in Jakarta, where the aluminium is repurposed into new products, and the coffee grounds are sent to West Java to be used as compost on local farms.
“We are honoured to receive this recognition from Nespresso,” says the resort’s General Manager Jean-Pierre Joncas. “It reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable practices across the resort. We believe that even simple actions, such as managing used coffee capsules, can contribute to a more sustainable future for the tourism industry.”

Mark Ashlin Senior, senior vice president of the Kanmo Group, echoed this sentiment, noting the desire to expand the initiative further. “Our goal is to ensure that every capsule can be responsibly recycled while contributing to a healthier ecosystem.”
By expanding the reach of this sustainability programme, Nespresso and its partners hope to inspire a cleaner future for the shores of Bali. It is a refreshing reminder that true luxury is not just about the experience, but the legacy it leaves behind.
