Ben Subrata: The Visionary Behind Sudamala Resorts

Founder and visionary behind Sudamala Resorts, Ben Subrata, embarked on a journey shaped by a deep appreciation for culture and art. Originally entrenched in energy-related businesses, his transition to hospitality was inspired by a personal passion for Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. His initial concept was simple: to create a space where art and culture could thrive—starting with a gallery and a gathering place for discussions. However, as the idea evolved, so did his ambition, ultimately giving rise to Sudamala Resorts, a brand that blends luxury with a celebration of Indonesia’s diverse traditions.

The name Sudamala itself, derived from the Balinese words for “holy water,” symbolises a commitment to purity and spiritual renewal. This theme is woven into the very fabric of Sudamala’s properties, each designed to reflect the local culture and traditions of its location.

From the Sanur Resort, the first property that opened in 2011, to the newer locations in Lombok and Labuan Bajo, each Sudamala resort incorporates distinct elements of the local culture—whether through Balinese design in Sanur or Lombok’s pottery and landscapes. As Subrata explains, it’s essential that visitors feel deeply connected to the place they’re in, rather than experiencing a generic, interchangeable luxury setting. Sudamala’s focus on local arts, architecture, and natural landscapes ensures that each resort tells its own story.

Sudamala Resorts’ next steps are already underway, with the brand expanding its footprint. After the pandemic paused their developments, the team is now preparing for Sudamala Resort, Ubud. Located just outside the cultural heart of Bali, Ubud’s resort will embrace local artistry and culture, continuing the Sudamala philosophy of incorporating authentic Balinese charm.

Beyond the Ubud expansion, Subrata is also introducing Sudamala Tented Resorts, which promise to offer luxury experiences in pristine, natural settings. These tented resorts will be built in remote yet breathtaking locations like Flores, where the brand hopes to pioneer a new type of accommodation that doesn’t disrupt the surrounding environment but enhances it.

Cultural authenticity of Sudamala Resorts

Ben Subrata of Sudamala Resorts has a clear goal: to position his chain as a local brand champion. In a competitive hospitality industry, Sudamala stands out by embracing Indonesian heritage and creating memorable, locally inspired experiences. “We want Sudamala to be synonymous with Indonesia’s beauty and culture,” Subrata says.

His vision is to build a legacy where people don’t just visit the resorts but connect with the land, the culture, and the communities. For him, it’s not just about building luxury resorts; it’s about becoming a part of the region’s cultural identity.

Reflecting on his journey, Subrata is quick to express that his proudest achievement isn’t the resorts themselves but the team that has been built along the way. He emphasizes that a dedicated team is essential for providing the kind of service Sudamala is known for. “Hospitality is about passion, and having a team that shares that passion is what drives us forward,” he says. The team at Sudamala is an integral part of the brand’s success, with many long-serving members.

For those looking to start their own hospitality venture, Subrata offers straightforward advice: commitment and passion are the cornerstones of success. “You need both to truly make an impact. If you’re not passionate about what you do, it will show in your work,” he explains. These principles have guided his approach to growing Sudamala, a brand built on unwavering dedication to quality and cultural authenticity.

When asked about his favourite property, Subrata responds diplomatically, likening it to choosing a favourite child. Each Sudamala resort has its own charm, but he does hold a special place for Sudamala in Flores. “It’s a heavenly spot,” he shares, describing the extraordinary views and the resort’s seamless integration into the natural environment. Despite the special allure of each location, he also points out that the Lombok property, with its breathtaking beachside setting and views across to Bali, holds its own unique appeal.
