Wiking: the next drinking trend?

These days, it isn’t just marathons that are being complemented by wine tasting affairs.

, Wiking: the next drinking trend?Get ready for wiking, a combination of hiking and wining, in the great outdoors of Oregon wine country. Brad Niva, owner of Rogue Wilderness Adventures, takes trekkers on a four-day hike with views of the Rogue River Canyon. They will spend the nights in lodges and taste ambrosias from wineries such as King’s Estate and Troon Vineyards.

This isn’t the first time Niva has integrated wine enjoyment into an adventure tour: his popular Paddles and Pinots itinerary has been taking rafters on a tasting of Oregon’s Pinot Noirs. “We decided to move this [concept] to our hiking clientele this year,” says Niva. “And it has been a hit. For many, there seems to be a guilt-free enjoyment to drinking after a day of hiking.”

This month, Grand Cru Wine Tours, who organises drive tours to wineries, will also offer a trek through Oregon’s first hiking trail in wine country in Willamette Valley. Hikers will stop by wineries such as Left Coast Cellars and Van Duzer Vineyards.
