, Chew on this

Named after the ‘King of Katong’ and landowner, Chew Joo Chiat, Baba Chews Bar and Eatery presents an enticing spread of modern and traditional dishes from the Straits of Malacca – think chilli crab cakes ($15) with thinly-sliced man tou chips to the classic Pong Tauhu ($10). And just like the food served, the restaurant integrates heritage Peranakan patterns into its sleek, contemporary interior. Pleasing even grandma’s discriminating palates are their delicious sharing dishes. The fork-tender Beef Short Ribs Rendang ($25) was well caramelised and stewed in an aromatic, creamy housemade rempah; while the locally-sourced Barramundi Goreng Chilli ($29) was pan-seared to perfection and boasted a crisp skin that’s generously coated with a punchy, sweet sambal. Hotel Indigo, 86 East Coast Road. Tel: 6723 2025
