Sudamala Resort, Sanur Deepens Sustainability Focus with UCO Recycling

Committed to advancing its green steps under the brand’s Sobat Hijau sustainability efforts across Bali, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo, Sudamala Resort, Sanur launched its used cooking oil (UCO) recycling initiative on 15 September 2025. The programme underscores the resort’s dedication to the environment and its surrounding community, collecting cooking oil waste from its own kitchen and neighbouring households before turning it into renewable energy.

This time, the resort partners with the Sudamala Bumi Insani Foundation (Yayasan Sudamala Bumi Insani), a non-profit established by Sudamala Resorts to empower communities and preserve local heritage, and with greentech innovator Noovoleum. Together, they will install a UCOllect point within the resort where kitchens, local partners, and nearby residents can deposit used cooking oil for recycling. This step reinforces the resort’s commitment to practical, community-focused environmental action, while supporting one of the foundation’s core pillars: environmental conservation.

Noovoleum, recognised for its proprietary green innovations, supplies the technology that streamlines the collection of used cooking oil and ensures an efficient recycling process. Once gathered, the oil is processed into renewable energy that helps reduce pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support Indonesia’s wider circular economy goals.

For Sudamala Resorts, the initiative reflects a commitment that extends beyond routine sustainability practices. As Ricky Putra, chief operating officer of Sudamala Resorts, emphasised, “Sobat Hijau is about finding real, tangible ways to protect our environment while engaging the community around us. Recycling used cooking oil is a simple step, but it makes a powerful difference in reducing waste and supporting clean energy.”

Beyond its practical benefits, the programme is also designed to nurture greater awareness across the community. Sri Nuka, corporate HR and sustainability director of Sudamala Resorts and chairwoman of the Sudamala Bumi Insani Foundation, underscored this intention, saying “This initiative is more than just recycling cooking oil, it is about creating awareness, inspiring behavioural change, and ensuring that sustainability is embedded in our culture. As the foundation’s chairwoman, I believe that partnerships between hospitality, technology, and the community can deliver long-lasting impact for Bali and beyond.”

This collaborative spirit sits at the heart of the effort. Joan Mamahit, cluster Bali Lombok general manager for Sudamala Resorts, highlighted the power of working together, noting “As a member of the Sanur community, we see sustainability as a shared responsibility. This initiative, strengthened through our collaboration with the Sudamala Bumi Insani Foundation, invites our neighbours and partners to join us in turning something often discarded into something that benefits everyone.”
