Jumeirah Bali Introduces Mawedangan: A Soulful Tea Ritual Honouring Javanese and Balinese Heritage

Nestled in the clifftop serenity of Uluwatu, Jumeirah Bali has unveiled Mawedangan, a soulfully curated tea ritual exclusive to the resort. Marking the official launch of the property’s Curated Ritual, Mawedangan is more than a teatime experience, it’s a sensory journey through Java and Bali’s intertwined histories, designed to offer moments of stillness, connection, and cultural immersion.

Unveiled during an intimate gathering at The Library, the launch was a graceful display of ceremonial elegance. Guests were welcomed with a traditional Javanese theatrical performance, followed by a symbolic parade of attendants bearing sacred objects used in the ritual. The event culminated in a couple’s dance, inspired by romantic court performances and accompanied by delicate gamelan melodies, setting the stage for what is now a permanent feature of the Jumeirah Bali guest journey.

Derived from Patehan, the Javanese royal tea ceremony once reserved for sultans and their guests, Mawedangan reimagines this refined tradition for the contemporary traveller. Set within the resort’s tranquil open-air spaces, Jumeirah Bali’s Mawedangan unfolds with quiet reverence and symbolic detail. Guests begin with an aroma-guided tasting of five Indonesian teas: Green Tea, Black Tea, Java Jasmine, White Tea, and Rosela – each selected for its unique notes and heritage. Once a tea is chosen, it is served with a curated selection of jajan pasar (Balinese traditional sweets) and accompanied by soothing aromatherapy.

Every element of the experience, from the narration to the gestures, scents, and textures, is designed to evoke introspection and cultural appreciation. In keeping with Jumeirah’s brand promise to elevate guest experiences through local identity, Mawedangan reflects the spiritual and architectural inspirations that define Jumeirah Bali. Much like the resort’s majestic design, which draws from the grandeur of Majapahit palaces, the ritual pays tribute to both Balinese hospitality and Javanese court traditions.

As a signature of the resort’s commitment to mindful luxury, the ritual is not offered anywhere else in the world, further positioning Jumeirah Bali as a destination where heritage meets high-touch hospitality.
