Named after the ‘King of Katong’ and landowner, Chew Joo Chiat, Baba Chews Bar and Eatery presents an enticing spread of modern and traditional dishes from the Straits of Malacca – think chilli crab cakes ($15) with thinly-sliced man tou chips to the classic Pong Tauhu ($10). And just like the food served, the restaurant integrates heritage Peranakan patterns into its sleek, contemporary interior. Pleasing even grandma’s discriminating palates are their delicious sharing dishes. The fork-tender Beef Short Ribs Rendang ($25) was well caramelised and stewed in an aromatic, creamy housemade rempah; while the locally-sourced Barramundi Goreng Chilli ($29) was pan-seared to perfection and boasted a crisp skin that’s generously coated with a punchy, sweet sambal.
